چکیده

The Addi-Chek (filtration; Millipore Corp., Bedford, Mass.) and BACTEC (radiometric detection of growth in culture media; Johnston Laboratories, Inc., Towson, Md.) systems were compared with the 10-ml culture (centrifugation) method for the recovery of microorganisms from peritoneal dialysate collected from patients with clinical evidence of peritonitis and containing greater than or equal to 200 leukocytes per mm3. Both alternate methods were comparable, and results were not significantly different from those of the conventional 10-ml culture method. All systems were adversely affected in their capacity to recover organisms when dialysates had been collected during periods of antimicrobial therapy.

Laboratory indices of clinical peritonitis: total leukocyte count, microscopy, and microbiologic culture of peritoneal dialysis effluent.

Total leukocyte count, microscopy, and conventional bacteriologic culture (10-ml sediment) of dialysis effluent were assessed for their ability to detect peritonitis in patients on peritoneal dialysis. A total of 73 patients were surveyed over a 17-month period. Laboratory findings included an examination of 1,774 dialysate samples and culture results from blood, wounds, indwelling catheters, a...

Prognostic value of dialysis effluent leukocyte count in children on peritoneal dialysis with peritonitis.

INTRODUCTION Early prediction of the efficacy of treatment in peritonitis complicating peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the best way to reduce morbidity. We studied the prognostic value of the third-day dialysis effluent leukocyte count after antibiotic therapy for prediction of treatment outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records of 31 children on PD, younger than 15 years old, admitted in A...

Peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients in Japan: a 2013 retrospective questionnaire survey of Japanese Society for Peritoneal Dialysis member institutions

Background: Peritonitis is the main cause of withdrawal from peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy in Japan. The precise extent of PD-associated peritonitis in Japan has not been investigated since 2005; we aimed to clarify the recent incidence and prognosis of PD peritonitis. Methods: The 248 institutional members of the Japanese Society for Peritoneal Dialysis were surveyed by questionnaire regard...

Diagnostic and prognostic role of peritoneal CA 125 in peritoneal dialysis patients presenting with acute peritonitis

BACKGROUND Cancer antigen 125 (CA125) is made by peritoneal mesothelial cells and can be measured in spent dialysate effluent from peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. It has been suggested that CA125 is a marker of peritoneal mesothelial cell mass and turnover. As PD CA125 increases during peritoneal inflammation, we wished to determine whether measuring PD CA125 during peritonitis provided addi...

Detecting Bacterial Growth in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Effluent Using Two Culture Methods

BACKGROUND/AIMS The aim of this study was to evaluate the peritonitis-causing bacteria detected in peritoneal fluid using a blood culture bottle in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). METHODS One-hundred and eleven dialysates from 43 patients suspected of peritonitis related to CAPD were retrospectively evaluated between May 2000 and February 2008. In all cas...
